Ford’s 2004 Shelby Cobra Concept featured a 645hp V10 and looked production-ready, but was cancelled due to financial crisis. It sold for $2.64M in 2021.. The car was the 1964 Shelby Cobra Flip-Top prototype, also known as CSX2196, and it was never some ordinary factory hot rod with nicer carbs and a bit more tire. It started life as a heavily modified leaf-spring Cobra test mule while Shelby American and Ford were trying to answer a growing horsepower problem. In late 1963, Chevrolet ‘s Grand Sport program had shown the Cobra camp that small.

Entwicklung und Design
Fords Designerteam entwarf und baute das Shelby Cobra-Konzept in nur fünf Monaten. Das Projekt wurde von Manfred Rumpel geleitet. Der V10-Motor mit 6,4 l Hubraum leistete 605 PS, hatte eine Spitzengeschwindigkeit von rund 310 km/h und beschleunigte von 0 auf 100 km/h in rund 4 Sekunden. Wie einige andere Ford-Fahrzeuge, die Anfang der Jahre 2000 entwickelt wurden (wie das GT40-Konzept, der Ford GT und der Ford Mustang der fünften Generation), ist das Shelby Cobra-Konzept eine moderne Interpretation eines älteren Fahrzeugs. Bei der Shelby Cobra erinnert das Design an die AC Cobra. Die erste Cobra verfügte über einen großen, leistungsstarken Ford Windsor-Motor in einem kleinen Roadster, den AC Cars auf Anfrage von Shelby modifiziert hatte. Das Shelby Cobra-Konzeptauto ist klein und minimalistisch und vermeidet die Annehmlichkeiten, die in den meisten modernen Autos zu finden sind (z. B. Klimaanlage, Radio, Antiblockiersystem und sogar Scheibenwischer). In einer Pressemitteilung zur Ankündigung des Debüts des Concept Cars im Jahr 2004 wiederholte Shelby das Ziel des Designerteams: „Das ist die Formel […] Es ist ein massiver Motor in einem winzigen und leichtem Auto“.

1962 Shelby Cobra 260 CSX2000 CSX2000 is the prototype Shelby Cobra, completed in February 1962 when Carroll Shelby and Dean Moon installed a Ford 260 cubic inch V8 into a motorless AC chassis at Moon’s Southern California shop.. Shelby had Len Bailey design this prototype 1968 Cobra, originally called the Cobra III in Shelby American internal documents, as a replacement for the 427 Cobra, which Shelby American called the Cobra II. Ford, which owned the Cobra trademark, complained about Shelby’s use of the name, so Shelby re-named it the Lonestar.
